The Douglas Cameron Baker Memorial Award

In memory of Douglas Cameron Baker, a former member of the Chicago ARML team, two annual awards have been established. The Douglas Baker Memorial National Award and the Douglas Baker Memorial Chicago Award will be given to deserving ARML students who best exemplify the qualities that Douglas himself brought to the contest: an enthusiasm for the competition, an enjoyment of the social interaction with other students, and a love for mathematics. Criteria: A student should possess team spirit, enjoy all aspects of the ARML competition, and help his or her teammates make the most of their ARML experience. Nominations for both awards can be submitted either by an ARML coach or by a student. Those nominating someone will be asked to write a short essay, not to exceed 300 words, explaining why this student is deserving of the award. One award has been specifically designated for a student on the Chicago team, while the other one will be open to any ARML student. A cash award of $250.00 will be given to each recipient. The National award will be presented at the annual ARML Competition. The recipient of the Douglas Baker Memorial Chicago Award will be decided by the ARML coaches from Chicago, and presented at an appropriate time decided by the coaches. The recipient of the Douglas Baker Memorial National Award will be determined by the ARML Executive Board. We wish to thank Marilyn and John Baker, along with the many friends and colleagues of Douglas Baker, for their generosity in establishing this award.

Students, coaches, and parents are invited to nominate a student on their ARML Team. To nominate a student, please provide a letter which includes the student's name, the team name, the nominator's name, and the specific reasons for the nomination. Nominations must be typed, cannot exceed one page using 12 font, and must be sent either as a Microsoft Word attachment to:
