 PROMYS
is designed to encourage motivated high school students
to explore the creative world of mathematics. Through their intensive
efforts to solve a large assortment of unusually challenging problems
in Number Theory, participants practice the art of mathematical
discovery – numerical exploration, formulation and critique of
conjectures, and techniques of proof and generalization. More
experienced participants may also study abstract algebra,
combinatorics, or geometry. Problem sets are accompanied by daily
lectures given by research mathematicians.

Participants are expected to spend a major portion of each day

Mathcamp is a five-week summer program for mathematically
talented students. Each student at Mathcamp designs a program of
study reflecting his or her own mathematical interests and
ambitions. There are at least four classes to choose from at any
time, on a variety of levels and topics. Classes are interactive,
with students actively engaged in mathematical discovery. Students
can also attend lectures by visiting mathematicians, do an
independent project, and participate in problem-solving
competitions.

Pi Mu Epsilon (www.pme-math.org) is dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding. To promote mathematics, the National Pi Mu Epsilon Council sponsors an annual conference in conjunction with the Mathematics Association of America's (MAA) annual MathFest. Traditionally, this conference occurs the first weekend of August. Undergraduate members of Pi Mu Epsilon are encouraged to give a 15 minute presentation on a mathematical topic of interest. The content of the presentation does not have to include original research. Although some presentations may impart new results, the majority often show results of exploration of a topic beyond what is traditionally covered in an undergraduate class. abilities and interests in mathematics and the sciences. This Web

opportunities. Members can participate in discussion forums with
